TELL ME QUESTIONS
Q: Tell me how you would make sure the brakes are working before starting a journey.
Brakes should not feel spongy or slack. The brakes should be tested as you set off and the car should not pull to one side.
Q: Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures and how you would check them.
In the manufacturer’s handbook. Use a reliable pressure gauge and check them when the tyres are cold.
Q: Tell me how you would make sure that your head restraint is correctly adjusted to give you the best protection in the event of a crash.
The head restraint should be adjusted so the rigid part of the head restraint is as high as your eyes or the top of your ears.
Q: Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure they have sufficient tread depth and their general condition is safe to use on the road.
There should be no cuts or bulges. There should be 1.6mm of tread depth across the central three quarters of the breadth of the tyre around the entire outer circumference of the tyre.
Q: Tell me how you would check that the head and tails lights are working. You do not have to exit the vehicle.
Explain that you would operate the switch (turn on the ignition if necessary) then walk around the vehicle.

Q: Tell me how you would check the power steering is working before starting a journey.
The steering should not become heavy. As you move off gently move the steering wheel and you should notice movement in the car and a warning light will appear on the instrument panel.
Q: Tell me how you switch on the rear fog lights and when you would use them
Operate the dipped headlight switch and turn on the rear fog lights. To be used in poor visibility when visibility is reduced to less than 100 metres.
Q: Tell me how you would switch the headlights from dipped to main beam and how you would know the main beam is on.
Turn on the dipped headlights and push the headlight arm away from you. A blue warning light will appear on the instrument panel.
12. Q: Open the bonnet and tell me how you check the engine oil.
Identify the oil dipstick pull it out clean with a cloth and put it back in, then take it out again and it should be between the minimum and maximum markers.
13. Q: Open the bonnet and tell how you would check the engine coolant.
Identify the engine coolant bottle and it should be between the minimum and maximum markers.
14. Q: Open the bonnet and tell me how you would check the brake fluid level.
Identify the brake fluid bottle and it should be between the minimum and maximum level.
